Frequently Asked Questions

Explore the answers to common questions about the all-electric Lexus RZ 450e. More information can always be found in the Owner's Manual or by contacting your Lexus Dealer.

Go to section:

Range

  • What is the range rating for the RZ?

On a full charge, the Natural Resources Canada estimated range rating depends on the powertrain and grade:

    RZ 450e Signature Package 354 km1
RZ 450e Luxury Package and RZ 450e Executive 315 km1

Actual driving range will vary depending on how/where you drive, charging habits, accessory use, outside temperature and other factors. Battery capacity also decreases over the life of the vehicle, which will reduce range.

  • What factors can impact driving range?

Driving range may decrease significantly depending on speed, outside temperature, accessory use, how/where you drive, charging habits, and other factors. Battery capacity also decreases over the life of the vehicle, which will reduce range.

  • Where can I find how much range/charge is remaining?

The expected kilometers remaining can always be found on the right side of the Multi-Information Display (MID). Like other Lexus vehicles, this figure is an estimate determined by your driving habits, and may not accurately predict actual range if your driving pattern changes.

The State of Charge Gauge on the meter display is similar to a conventional fuel gauge. If you'd like to see a state of charge percentage, you can find this inside the Lexus app once your vehicle is registered. Note that this is an estimate and may vary based on your driving pattern and other factors.

No matter your preference, we recommend not allowing your state of charge to get too low, particularly on your first few drives as the RZ learns about your driving habits, and you become accustomed to the vehicle's range and your available charging options.

  • What happens if I run out of charge?

While we hope this does not happen to you, Lexus Roadside Assistance2 can provide towing to your home, or the nearest public charging station to help get you back on the road.

With your new car warranty, Lexus Roadside Assistance2 is included for 48 months for unlimited kilometers.

If towing the RZ or using another roadside service, be sure to refer to the Owner's Manual for additional information about necessary towing precautions.

Charging

  • How do I charge a RZ?

The charging process is similar to that of filling up a gasoline vehicle—simply insert the connector into the vehicle and charging will begin. The charging process may vary slightly, as there are different types of charging equipment and power sources that may be used. RZ includes a Level 1 charging cable that can be plugged into a standard 120-Volt wall outlet, and it is possible to set a charging schedule to take advantage of varying electricity rates throughout the day.

Customers who own a home may wish to purchase a Level 2 Home Charger to increase their charging speed. Level 2 charging operates at 240 volts and will require the installation of a 240 volt outlet in the home or hard wiring into the panel. The ChargePoint CPH50 Level 2 AC Home Charger is available from your Lexus Dealer or online from ChargePoint . Please use a licensed electrician for installation of a home charger.

Customers can charge in public using Level 2 chargers or Level 3 DC Fast Chargers3 under ideal conditions. Public charging stations5 can be found here

Refer to the Owner's Manual for more detail on how to charge RZ and the available charging options.

  • Where is the plug-in location of the vehicle?

The charge inlet door is located on the driver's side front quarter panel.

  • How frequently do I have to charge it?

To get the most out of your driving range and to avoid range anxiety, make charging a regular habit by setting a charging schedule using the vehicle's Charge Management System or using the Lexus App4.

Depending on the type of charger, we recommend charging to certain limits to maintain the long-term battery health.

    • AC (Level 1 and Level 2): Go ahead and charge to 100%. Once 100% is reached, it will stop charging to help preserve the battery.
    • DC Fast Charging (Level 3)3: We recommend charging to 80% to achieve the maximum benefit of the quick charging speed. It is possible to charge to 100% with this method, but the charging rate will automatically be reduced once it reaches 80% to help preserve the battery. To help maintain long-term battery health, DC Fast Charging is limited to two cycles of charging (Low → 80%) per day throughout the year.
  • What types of chargers can I use for the RZ?

The RZ is equipped with a standard J1772 connector for Level 1 and Level 2 AC charging and a CCS1 connector for DC Fast Charging (Level 3).

Either DC Fast Charging or AC charging may be used at any time when charging the vehicle. Currently, RZ customers are not able to charge on the Tesla charging network.

  • Where can I charge the RZ?

The RZ can be charged at home with the provided Level 1 charging cord or available Level 2 charging solutions, or at public charging stations5 with Level 2 Chargers and Level 3 DC Fast Chargers3. The ChargePoint CPH50 Level 2 AC Home Charger is available from your Lexus Dealer or online from ChargePoint . Note that DC Fast Charging is limited to two cycles of charging (Low → 80%) per day throughout the year.

  • Do I need special charging equipment? Is charging equipment included?

The RZ includes a Level 1 charging cord that can be plugged into any standard three-prong 120V outlet. While this is likely the most accessible charging method, it may not be suited for all drivers due to the slower charging rate.

For faster charging at home, you may wish to purchase a Level 2 Home Charger and have it installed by a licensed electrician. The RZ is equipped with Level 2 and 3 charging connectors, so you can plug-in at home, at work, or at most public charging stations5 across the country. The ChargePoint CPH50 Level 2 AC Home Charger is available from your Lexus Dealer or online from ChargePoint .

  • Which public charging5 networks can I use to charge the RZ?

The RZ will charge with any network that has a J1772 (Level 2) or CCS 1 (DC Fast Charging) connector, including ChargePoint, Flo and EV Connect. You can find the nearest charging station near you on the Lexus app.

Currently, RZ customers are not able to charge on the Tesla charging network.

  • How long does it take to charge a RZ?

In optimal conditions, the RZ takes the following amount of time to charge:

Charging Type Level 1 Level 2 DC Fast Charging
    State of Charge
    State of Charge Low → 100% Low → 100% Low → 80%
    Time
    Time ~50 hours ~11 hours ~1 hour3
    Rate of Charge3
    Rate of Charge3 ~7km/hour ~36km/hour ~6km/minute
    Charging Current/Power Needed
    Charging Current/Power Needed 12A 32A 150 kW
  • What factors can impact charging?

Charging time will vary mainly based on starting battery level and outside temperature and HVAC/accessory use.

  • Are certain charging methods impacted more than others?

One key factor that affects DC Fast Charging3 is weather. As temperatures decrease, DC charging time will increase. As temperatures drop below freezing, this increase can be significant.

Charging time also will increase if multiple DC Fast Charging3 sessions are conducted within the same day, regardless of the weather. Level 1 and 2 charging speeds will not be affected.

  • How do I monitor and manage my charging?

The Lexus app4 includes the convenient Charge Management feature. It offers great tools and insights, including charging scheduling and more.

The Lexus app can also be used to find public charging locations.

You can also monitor your charging—including battery level and estimated range—through the Multi-Information Display (MID) and central touchscreen in your vehicle.

It's important to note that any estimated vehicle range calculations shown are based on previous usage patterns and may not accurately predict the vehicle range.

Performance

  • Why drive an all-electric vehicle?

Lexus RZ delivers an extraordinary blend of power and fuel efficiency; breathtaking acceleration and supremely quiet ride; engaging driving dynamics and blissful peace of mind.

The innovative hybrid motor system directly transmits engine torque to the front and rear wheels, for responsive smooth performance that's also incredibly fuel efficient.

RZ makes it easy to stay in charge. It can be conveniently charged at home, overnight and on-demand, as well as at public charging stations when out and about. No more trips to the gas station needed.

Drivers won't just save money on gas, either—they may also be able to enjoy federal and provincial purchase or lease incentives.

Driving a Lexus RZ can also help the environment by reducing CO2 emissions, without sacrificing performance.

  • What is the all-electric vehicle driving experience like?

Thanks to the use of electric motors instead of internal combustion engines, all-electric vehicles provide smooth acceleration, and immediate torque response.

The absence of an engine and transmission make the RZ naturally quiet. Lexus ensures that other operation and ambient noises are quelled by insulating cabin style and sound design to ensure a smooth journey.

  • How does DRIVE MODE SELECT work?

Drive Mode Select improves the vehicle's traction off road, by optimizing throttle control and wheel slip based on the condition selected.

Drive Mode Select has five separate driving modes:

    • NORMAL: Provides an excellent balance between driving performance and fuel efficiency, suiting a wide variety of driving scenes.
    • ECO: To enhance power consumption, a gentler amount of torque is generated when pressing the accelerator, and air conditioning operation (heating/cooling) is suppressed.
    • SPORT: For more responsive steering and accelerating, the powertrain delivers more control, suitable for sporty driving.
    • RANGE: Controls are combined to suppress power consumption and maximize the driving range.
    • CUSTOM: Freely combine the modes of the powertrain, chassis, and air conditioning functions.

Cost & Ownership

  • How much does it cost to charge my vehicle?

According to NR-Can, you can expect fuel costs of up to $672 per year with the RZ5. Exact cost may vary based on your local electricity rates.

Rates for charging an EV are measured in cents per kilowatt hour. Charging at home is the most cost-effective option, as one can charge their RZ when rates are lowest. Public charging rates are more expensive and will vary based on time of day and the various prices charged by the different charging station operators.

  • How long is RZ's battery designed to last?

Like all Lithium-Ion batteries, there will be some reduction in capacity over the life of the battery. For unprecedented peace of mind, Lexus provides all RZ owners Battery Electric Vehicle Component Warranty of 8 years/160,000 kms, which includes the battery.

  • Does the battery require any maintenance?

RZ's traction battery is virtually maintenance-free; however, it does require periodic inspections to ensure it operates as efficiently as possible.

  • Do Lexus electrified vehicles require additional maintenance?

Lexus battery electric vehicles follow the same maintenance schedule as all other Lexus vehicles with an interval of every 6 months or 8,000 KM (whichever comes first). Familiar tasks such as rotating tires, replacing various fluids, and replacing the cabin air filters is still required. But the way the electric system works may reduce how often other areas of the car need servicing. The battery, electric motors, and associated electronics require little to no regular maintenance. There are less fluids such as engine oil that requires regular maintenance. Due to regenerative braking, brake pad and brake rotor wear is significantly reduced. There are far fewer moving parts relative to a conventional fuel powered vehicle such as the engine itself, starter, alternator and drive belts.
